Why Women Over 40 Are Outperforming Younger Females in Defence Forces Fitness Tests

A Surprising Trend in Military Fitness

In a world where youth is often equated with peak physical performance, a recent finding from the Defence Forces offers a surprising twist: women over the age of 40 are outperforming their younger counterparts in the official Defence Forces fitness test. The data, drawn from close to 5,000 personnel tested last year, reveals a striking pattern—older female personnel are passing at higher rates, with women over 40 achieving a 100% pass rate, while the failure rate among younger women (aged 17–29) stood at just over 12%.

This unexpected result challenges many assumptions about age, endurance, and physical capability—and it may have deeper implications for how we understand fitness, motivation, and resilience, especially among women in demanding professions like the military.

Breaking Down the Numbers

According to the Defence Forces report:

Of 106 women aged 17 to 29, only 88% passed, with over 12% failing. For women over 40, the pass rate was 100%. In comparison, men had a 4% overall failure rate, but like women, younger males had higher failure rates (7% in the 17–29 group). Older men had 99–100% pass rates, showing a parallel trend with the female data.

While gender-specific standards are factored into the evaluation, the underlying message is clear: older soldiers—both men and women—are consistently performing well, defying typical fitness stereotypes.

What Does the Fitness Test Involve?

The Defence Forces fitness assessment isn’t a walk in the park. It’s designed to test real combat readiness and consists of three core components:

Muscular Endurance: One-minute press-up test One-minute sit-up test Targets are adjusted based on age and gender Cardiovascular Endurance: A two-mile run for personnel under 40 An optional three-mile walk for those over 40 Loaded March: A 10-kilometre march with weighted gear, meant to replicate battlefield conditions

These components reflect a balance between strength, stamina, and combat utility, making the test a valid measure of functional fitness for military roles.

Why Are Older Women Excelling?

Several possible explanations shed light on why women over 40 are outperforming their younger peers in this demanding test:

1. Experience and Mental Fortitude

Older women in the military tend to have years of discipline, training, and routine built into their daily lives. This consistency in lifestyle, combined with a strong mental attitude, often compensates for any natural decline in speed or power. They’ve developed not just strength—but strategic strength.

2. Better Preparation and Motivation

Women over 40 in service are often highly motivated to maintain their place and status in the Defence Forces. They know what’s expected and prepare rigorously. Younger recruits may underestimate the difficulty of the test or lack the same level of commitment due to inexperience.

3. Lifestyle Stability

Older personnel often lead more stable lives—better sleep routines, healthier diets, and structured physical training. Consistency trumps intensity when it comes to passing demanding fitness exams.

4. Understanding Their Bodies

With age comes awareness. Women in their 40s may better understand how to train effectively without overtraining, how to recover, and how to prioritize injury prevention—a critical factor in military fitness.

Different Standards, But Equal Determination

It’s important to note that the fitness standards differ across age and gender brackets. Younger soldiers are expected to meet higher benchmarks, which explains some of the failure rates among new recruits. However, even with adjusted expectations, the fact that no woman over 40 failed suggests more than just leniency—it shows a deep level of fitness, commitment, and discipline.

The final part of the test, the 10km loaded march, is standardized across gender and remains the same whether you’re 25 or 45. It tests real-world readiness—how long you can carry weight, walk in formation, and remain mission-capable. Excelling in this proves that older women are more than up for the task.

Changing the Narrative Around Age and Fitness

The results from the Defence Forces shine a light on a broader truth: age is not the enemy of fitness. In fact, for many, age brings with it the mental resilience, emotional control, and strategic mindset needed to thrive in physically demanding roles.

For young women looking to enter or advance in the military, these findings also offer a valuable lesson—strength isn’t just about youth or natural ability. It’s about consistency, mindset, and preparation.

And for society at large, this is a powerful reminder that older women are not past their prime—they’re just getting started. Whether in uniform or everyday life, they’re proving their capability to meet and exceed challenges that many still wrongly believe are beyond their reach.
