Pride Month 2025: The Story of Lavender Menace, Scotland’s First Gay Bookshop

Tucked within the cobbled streets of Edinburgh’s Forth Street, in a time when even whispering the word “gay” in public felt radical, a little bookshop lit a quiet revolution. That bookshop was Lavender Menace—Scotland’s first lesbian and gay bookstore, born not just from a need for literature, but from a hunger for representation, belonging, and unapologetic visibility.

As Pride Month 2025 unfurls its rainbow banners across Scotland and beyond, it’s the perfect moment to revisit the story of Lavender Menace—a pioneering space that challenged silence with stories, and prejudice with pages.

The Early Sparks: Literature on the Dance Floor

Before the bookshop had walls or windows, it had a pulse.

In the 1970s, Edinburgh’s queer community found refuge not in institutions, but in clubs, community centers, and whispered connections. One such space was a gay disco called Fire Island, where between beats of Donna Summer and the Bee Gees, a small but radical idea bloomed—a bookstall inside a nightclub.

This humble setup, known as Open Gaze, was the precursor to Lavender Menace. Launched by Bob Orr in 1976 under the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group (SHRG), the bookstall sold LGBTQ+ literature and zines—often censored or unavailable elsewhere. It wasn’t just selling books; it was circulating identity, at a time when Scotland was still grappling with the very legality of same-sex relationships.

By 1978, with help from activist and fellow visionary Sigrid Nielsen, Open Gaze had become a community cornerstone. But boldness invites backlash. In 1979, the stall was accused of distributing a “blasphemous” greeting card, leading to an internal rupture. Rather than compromise, Sigrid and Bob did what all great revolutionaries do: they started anew.

Lavender Menace Is Born

Taking inspiration from the American lesbian feminist group Lavender Menace—who famously challenged their exclusion from the women’s rights movement—Sigrid and Bob named their bookstore after them. It was a wink to feminist defiance and a vow to never shrink themselves for anyone.

In August 1982, Lavender Books officially opened its doors on Forth Street, right in time for the bustling energy of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It wasn’t just a business—it was a manifesto in paperback. Inside those four walls, people didn’t just buy books; they found mirrors, mentors, and meaning.

A Cultural Lighthouse in Print

Lavender Menace didn’t play it safe. Its shelves carried everything from lesbian poetry and gay history to trans narratives and radical queer theory. It spotlighted LGBTQ+ voices long ignored by mainstream publishing and brought international works to local hands.

And it wasn’t just about what they sold—it was what they created. During the Fringe Festival, the shop transformed into a vibrant arts venue, staging original short plays inspired by queer literature. These performances blurred the line between activism and art, turning stories into living, breathing experiences.

The store also hosted author readings, book launches, and community discussions. In an era before Instagram or even email newsletters, people found each other through flyers, word of mouth, and shared need. Lavender Menace wasn’t just selling books—it was building a movement.

More Than a Memory: A Legacy Reborn

Though the original Lavender Menace bookshop eventually closed, its legacy was never forgotten. In recent years, the founders returned with Lavender Menace Queer Books, a community archive and pop-up space designed to celebrate the shop’s history and preserve its remarkable collection.

In a world still wrestling with LGBTQ+ censorship and erasure, these archives serve as both a time capsule and a toolkit—proof that queer storytelling has always been vital, revolutionary, and beautifully disruptive.

Pride 2025: Remembering Our Quiet Giants

As Scotland celebrates Pride Month 2025—now armed with inclusive education, progressive laws, and public celebrations—it’s easy to forget the quieter revolutions that paved the way. Yes, Scotland decriminalized male same-sex acts in 1981. Yes, it legalized same-sex marriage in 2014. And yes, it became the first country in the world to embed LGBTQ+ inclusive education into its curriculum in 2021.

But these victories stand on the shoulders of places like Lavender Menace—where two brave souls dared to believe that literature could do more than entertain. It could liberate.

Today, bookstores across the world carry LGBTQ+ titles. Rainbow flags wave in corporate windows. Pride is mainstream. But somewhere in the pages of history, a little purple shop in Edinburgh dared to be first, and for those who walked through its doors, it changed everything.

To honor Pride in 2025, let’s remember that change doesn’t always come in marches or headlines. Sometimes, it comes in the form of a book… placed gently into the hands of someone who finally sees themselves.

And that, in every way, is the real power of a place like Lavender Menace.
