Trump’s Crackdown & Public Opinion: 72% of Americans Oppose Trans Women in Female Sports

In a country where social issues often divide the population, a new front in the gender identity debate has emerged — transgender participation in women’s sports. A recent nationwide poll, combined with fresh policy moves from the Trump administration, has brought this topic to the spotlight. And the results? They reveal overwhelming public support for protecting the integrity of women’s sports based on biological sex.

As the administration pushes forward with legislation aimed at redefining Title IX and defunding institutions that allow trans women in female-only spaces, Americans — across party lines — are taking a clear stand.

Poll Reveals Overwhelming Public Support for Women-Only Sports

A new survey conducted by Napolitan News Service has found that 72% of Americans believe biological males who identify as women should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports. This strong majority spans political affiliations, gender, and age groups.

Here are the key findings:

69% of all respondents also believe transgender-identifying males should not be allowed in women’s bathrooms or locker rooms. Among Democrats, 50% supported excluding trans women from female sports. 32% opposed, and 17% were unsure. Among Republicans, a staggering 88% supported restrictions, with only 10% opposed. Even among independent voters, support for keeping women’s sports exclusive to biological females was significant.

The data shows that this issue is not as polarizing as it might seem — most Americans are clearly leaning in favor of protecting fairness and safety in female athletic spaces.

This viewpoint is consistent with additional polls. A 2024 Pew Research Center survey found that 66% of Americans support requiring athletes to compete based on sex assigned at birth, and an NBC poll found 75% opposed trans women in female sports leagues.

The sentiment is increasingly clear: for many Americans, the issue is not about discrimination but about preserving fairness and the original intent of women’s sports categories.

Trump Administration Moves Swiftly to Align Policy with Public Opinion

With such widespread public support, the Trump administration has taken aggressive steps to transform this opinion into formal policy.

On February 5, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14201, titled “Protecting Women’s Sports and Spaces.” This executive order:

Requires all educational institutions that receive federal funding to enforce sports team participation strictly by biological sex. Threatens to withhold federal funds from schools, colleges, and athletic associations that allow trans women to compete in women’s categories. Calls for the Department of Education to investigate and penalize violations under Title IX, the civil rights law originally designed to protect women in education and sports.

In addition, the Department of Education has launched a Special Investigations Team to oversee compliance with these new rules. Several school districts — including some in New York and California — are already under review for allowing trans participation in female sports leagues and access to gendered facilities.

The administration has also signaled interest in rolling back Obama-era protections that classified gender identity as a protected category under Title IX. This could effectively eliminate federal civil rights claims made by transgender students denied access to their preferred sports teams or bathrooms.

These sweeping changes mark a significant shift — both legally and culturally — and they’ve set off a wave of reactions from across the political spectrum.

Legal and Political Pushback: A Nation Still Divided

Despite the clear majority support from the public, the Trump administration’s moves have triggered legal, political, and activist resistance.

Democratic governors, including Maine’s Janet Mills, have publicly refused to comply with the executive order. Mills stated, “This is a civil rights issue. We’ll see them in court.” Civil rights organizations like the ACLU, Human Rights Campaign, and Lambda Legal are preparing lawsuits, arguing that these policies violate the Equal Protection Clause and Title IX’s broader civil rights guarantees. Feminist groups are divided. While some advocate for trans inclusion as part of broader women’s rights, others argue that allowing trans women to compete undermines decades of hard-won progress in female athletics. Students and universities are also pushing back. Multiple high school and college athletes have filed lawsuits claiming that the new rules deny trans students equal access and subject them to discrimination.

Meanwhile, Republican-led states are doubling down. Over 20 states have now passed their own “Save Women’s Sports” acts, reinforcing the federal rules at a local level. These state laws often go further — including penalties for athletic associations that allow trans inclusion.

Public figures, athletes, and political candidates are weighing in. For many, this issue is becoming a litmus test for 2026 midterm candidates and a core message for both sides going into the 2028 presidential race.

Where Do We Go From Here?

At the heart of this national conversation lies a difficult and emotional debate. On one side, fairness, safety, and biology. On the other, inclusion, identity, and civil rights.

The polling makes it clear: the vast majority of Americans want to preserve female-only categories in sports and facilities. They believe that biological sex should determine athletic eligibility, especially in competitive sports where strength and speed advantages can shape outcomes.

At the same time, there’s growing recognition that transgender individuals also deserve dignity, safety, and inclusion — and that balancing these values is the true challenge.

Here’s what lies ahead:

Legal battles are inevitable. The courts will likely be the final voice on how Title IX is interpreted in this new era. More states will continue to pass their own laws — reinforcing or resisting the federal stance. Schools and institutions will face funding pressures and mounting lawsuits depending on the path they choose. Public opinion, while currently united on this issue, could evolve as the legal and social conversation deepens.

The Trump administration’s policies on transgender athletes may be controversial, but they are undeniably supported by the majority of American voters — at least for now. With 72% of Americans backing restrictions on trans women in female sports, the administration has found strong public approval for its latest cultural stand.

Whether these rules will stand up in court or shift with the next election cycle remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the American public has spoken, and they want their sports — especially women’s sports — to be grounded in biological reality.
