A powerful wave of inspiration swept through Malta this week as the Social Innovation and Global Ethics Forum (SIGEF) hosted its prestigious Women Awards, shining a spotlight on outstanding women from across the world. These trailblazers were honoured for their unwavering commitment to women’s advancement, inclusion, innovation, and empowerment — all in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recognising Impactful Women Leaders
Among the celebrated changemakers was Christiane Caruana, who received accolades for her leadership in diplomacy and women’s advocacy. Caruana’s work continues to influence policies and initiatives that ensure women have a stronger voice on the global stage.
Equally inspiring was Shakira Fenech, who was recognised for her ground-breaking efforts with survivors of domestic violence and youth empowerment through her work at the St Jeanne Antide Foundation. Her mission is reshaping support systems and giving countless women and youth the strength to rebuild their lives.
International recognition was also given to Mayara Marinov, Elizabeth de Moraes, Salwa Arfaoui, and Kimia Penton — each known for their pioneering contributions to women-led innovation and global empowerment. These women are not only transforming industries but also uplifting communities by championing gender-inclusive growth.
A Summit Rooted in Purpose and Progress
Hosted in Malta with the support of VisitMalta, the SIGEF summit drew in global leaders, experts, social entrepreneurs, and innovators from various sectors. It served as an impactful meeting ground for exchanging ideas, fostering partnerships, and steering action toward gender equality and sustainable innovation.
The event was officially opened by Tourism Minister Ian Borg and Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, who underscored Malta’s commitment to becoming a hub for ethical innovation and women’s leadership.
Over 50 Voices of Change
With a line-up featuring over 50 high-profile speakers, the summit addressed themes like climate change, women in leadership, technological innovation, mental health, and social equity. These voices brought together diverse experiences and powerful perspectives — all with the shared goal of building a more inclusive future.
SIGEF 2025 firmly positioned Malta not just as a scenic destination, but as a global platform for equity and innovation. The presence of so many influential women and allies proved that global change begins with united, purpose-driven leadership.
Why It Matters
This momentous gathering didn’t just hand out awards — it echoed a global call to action. Every woman honoured at SIGEF represents thousands more who are rewriting the narrative of what leadership looks like in every corner of the world.
By bringing visibility to their work, platforms like SIGEF ensure that these stories of resilience, impact, and innovation inspire more women to lead, disrupt, and rise.
At a time when gender equity remains an urgent global need, events like the SIGEF Women Awards stand as powerful reminders that real change begins with recognising, supporting, and amplifying those who are already leading the way.
